Farewell to a Beloved Pizza

It was one of those culinary safe havens where you knew you will be spoiled. Prices were reasonable, the service top-notch and the pizzas — well — perfect.

The rather big guy in there who looked like the GM even refused to have his pizzas delivered. “They’d lose the taste, don’t even try,” he said — and quite often offered one of those delicious limoncellos, a lemon liqueur produced in Southern Italy.

Right. I’m talking about Limoncello, the pizzeria named after the liqueur, down on Sukhumvit Soi 11. We were devotees of Limoncello, of its low key style and absolute trustworthiness.

Well, a recent visit to Limoncello, an offspring of Zanotti, turned out to be the last visit.

The mussels in a formerly creamy white-wine/tomato sauce came absolutely tasteless. The spinach cannelloni came absolutely tasteless and the Pizza Quattro Formaggio was a wettish wishy-washy — only to be topped by the 95 baht they asked for a bottle of soda water. About the price of a glass of house wine.

Similar fate happened to many other pizzerias in town. Once the established cooks flee the scene of the success to get a slightly better paid job elsewhere, the whole good reputation goes down the drain.

But there are alternatives! No, not The Pizza Company or Pizza Hut. These are culinary criminals serving degenerated pastry cakes.

Heard only good things about Basilico Pizzeria on 8 Sukhumvit Soi 33.

Or try the lunch pizza buffet at Viva Vino on 30 Sukhumvit Soi 22, 200 baht net a head.

And never heard of Big Mama Pizzeria on 139 Asok Soi 1 with its pleasant outdoor dining area?

And even if it’s a run-down place, get the colossal Yak Pizza of Ronny’s Authentic New York Pizza delivered.

Some still like Bella Napoli on Sukhumvit 33, where the Bangkokian pizza crave started some years ago. Others are not too unhappy with New York Style Pizza on Thonglor. Others again stay with Scoozi.

I was never disappointed with the Four Seasons’

Biscotti

– but still, haven’t had an angelic pizza lately in Bangkok. Even though it is said that we have better pizzerias here in Bangkok than in Italy.

Help me out! What’s your favorite pizza in town?
