Thaigest /ˈtaɪdʒɛst/ is an independent digest /ˈdaɪdʒɛst/ of news, stories and perspectives from the Thailand behind the headlines and between the lines.
Curated by a long-time resident-turned-citizen with decades of experience in international media, Thaigest draws on a lifetime of watching, reporting on and living through Thailand’s extraordinary twists and turns.
Having travelled far and wide, one can think of few countries as beautiful, fascinating and endlessly intriguing as Thailand — a place of extraordinary beauty, captivating contradictions and a seemingly inexhaustible capacity to surprise.
Open for debate
Debate is welcome at Thaigest. Disagree? Good. Say it well, and bring sources.
We publish selected contributions from readers and writers, under their real names or a pseudonym. What matters is the quality of the argument, the integrity of the sourcing and a willingness to look at Thailand from different angles. All contributions are edited and fact-checked before going live.
“… really crazy things…”
Thaigest — long enough to have seen this movie before. The names change. The governments change. The headlines change. Thailand really doesn’t.
Thaigest is no copycat site on lifestyle, politics, travel, food and events in Thailand. From the profane to the elaborate, it’s a vibrant, kaleidoscopic portal for the Thailand connoisseur. Thaigest is non-commercial and carries no advertising. It stands for measured, carefully opined insider takes with an easy-going intellectuality. Not that we’re politically correct, heaven forbid. First and foremost, we aim to enhance civilized dialogue and debate about this fascinating, never truly understood country, with its capital Bangkok, the world’s unofficial capital of sin, sizzle and spice — a wildly poetic metropolis that, deep in its heart, remains a wildly charming village.
Thaigest will offer some girlie talk. There is already a myriad of concerned analysts of the Thai female beauty. There is considerably more to Thailand than worn-out clichés. We have our own takes on these modern-day sirens — “poor Thai women from the countryside with a modest education can make well-educated, worldly Western men do really crazy things,” as an old Bangkok hand once said. While we’re at it, we’d rather hear from the women themselves.
