A poster on ThaiVisa’s forum recently asked if there are any other Thailand-related expat websites than ThaiVisa and Stickman. Well, humbly & selflessly I posted the link to Matt’s Top 100 Thai Blogs. A few minutes later the thread was deleted by ThaiVisa’s ever so eager moderators.
Consider yourself a free thinker? Then Thailand’s most popular forum is not for you. Threads and your opinions are moderated police state-like. Sure thing, they’re only protecting their own turf. And maybe because, as Stickman once told me: “You won’t read more rubbish than in forums.”
Seriously, for the Thailand free thinkers there’s a decent alternative out there:
TeakDoor.com
– “The Thailand Expat Forum for Travel, Lifestyle and Fun.” You’ll hear a swear word and bad language now and then on TeakDoor — and rightly so. Among the punters are real longtimers caring about the issues with heart and blood.
TeakDoor’s not a money generating site, but a true forum bringing you an amusing diversity of in-depth experiences and insider knowledge. Read enthralling reportages about irrelevances, enjoy an absorbing coverage of prosaicness. Take the latest newsletter:
– mobs00 goes to one of Thailands national parks to shoot some animals with his new camera:
Shooting and Trapping Wildlife in Kaeng Krachan National Park
– A meal that you can cook while drunk and share with your dog:
A midnight snack after a few beers. Tuna/Fish Spaghetti — Want to know what its like to live in a village in deepest darkest Isaan?
Life in the Village
– DrB0b goes to the opening of a new temple in Chiang Mai and gets drunk:
New Temple Celebration — Chiang Mai
– Getting married and building a house in Chonabot:
The Evolution of Mickey Mouse House
– Koh Samui bar owner goes native in Thailand, an interesting tale of riches to rags to okay again in Thailand:
Skint in Thailand/Going native
Refreshing, contrarian. All thumbs up.
There are other Thai expat forums out there — such as the Ajarn Forum or Paknam Web. Which one do you prefer and why?
What, absolutely should launch an own forum? How flattering…
